You’ve surely heard of Marie Kondo whose book was turned into the successful Netflix series, Tidying Up. The premise of both revolves around Kondo’s now-famous method of home organization, KonMari. Kondo’s fans love her philosophy of decluttering by purposefully getting rid of possessions that don’t “spark joy” and then thanking each discarded item for its usefulness.
The KonMari method takes a strategic approach to each area of the home in order to help individuals and families simplify their lifestyles and embrace organization. Because you begin each day choosing clothes and getting dressed, it makes sense that closet organization is emphasized within her philosophy.
Before we go into any further details, I wanted to let you now that I have created a capsule wardrobe planner that I used myself to simplify my morning routine (and my life in general) and become more mindful of my shopping habits. It’s in my free resource library with other printables and ebooks. Feel free to download it at the bottom of this post.
How does it work?
When it comes to KonMari-ing your clothing, there are some very specific rules. The first step involves determining which items to discard. You’ll lay out all your clothes on the bed or floor, touching each one in order to evaluate whether it sparks joy for you. If you’re feeling unsure, it’s likely that piece can be discarded.
Once you’ve gone through the process of deciding which items stay, which to donate and which to throw away, you’ll be ready to take the clothing that sparks joy and organize it in your closet and drawers.
The KonMari way of organizing clothing involves hanging them by weight and color. Darker, heavier and longer items should go on the left, with lighter clothes being placed on the right. You can find an order along those guidelines that works for you. Kondo has a particular folding method in which items are meticulously folded and rolled, then stood upright in drawers or shelves.
In order to get the most out of the Tidying Up approach to organizing your clothes, it’s a good idea to look for tools that can simplify the process. Drawer organizers, inserts and shelving units are some items you may wish to consider. Perhaps the best investment, though, is a good closet organizer that lets you distribute your apparel by type, weight, color and length.
